Choosing the right leech grade for the procedure

Choosing the right leech grade for the procedure

Matching leech size to the procedure is a small decision with real consequences for attachment, draw volume and patient comfort.

Reading the grades

Grading is by body length and correlates with draw capacity. Finer animals are precise and gentle; larger animals remove more blood and suit bulkier, well-established congestion.

  • Fine — digits, small flaps, delicate sites
  • Standard — general hirudotherapy and reconstructive use
  • Large — higher draw volume, established congestion

When in doubt

Order a mix, or describe the indication to your supplier and let them grade for it. Consistency between batches matters as much as the grade itself.
